The "Gelf - Mallu" Konnection... :D
Here's a situation that has played around in my life a million times :
Random Person : Hi, im XYZ... Im a Punjabi/Tamilian/Mumbaikaar/etc etc etc
Good ol' me : Hi im Nirmal... Im a "Mallu"
**sudden change in expression in the other person's face and not for the better i must say**
RP (in visible discomfort now) : oh a mallu eh... which part are you from???... mainland kerala or extended kerala???
Moi : huh???... (my classic confused look)
RP : Are you from kerala or from the "Gelf"...
Moi : Oh, ya i did my schooling in Dubai...
RP : So your a "Gelf - Mallu"... aaaargh... (runs away at the speed of light)
Well ok fine, that was a bit exaggerated, but you get the drift right... what i cannot figure out for the love of god is what in the hell did our kind do wrong to be treated with such contempt.
So what if a 2 or 3 million of us went to the middle east during the oil boom... so what if we form only 75% of the population there... so what if half the electronic items in kerala are imported by housewives via their hard working husbands... so what if our financial capital is placed outside our state, ok even outside our country in DUBAI... so what if we apply coconut oil to our hair, for the sleek n silky shine... so what if we pronounce simply as Zimbly or MBA as Yem-Bee-Yay... so what if Shakeela made a few stupid movies in our industry...
Bored with the so whats???... well me too... who cares what the opinion about a gelf- mallu is like... i will wear a lungi as and when i feel like and i shall destroy the english language as much as possible and my infatuation with gold will always continue...
anyways i have officially run out of things to write in my first post... like i said random things are gonna come up here... just felt like kicking off my blog with this topic (again i have no clue from where i got this idea of writing on this topic)
cheers

This is something which every non resident of a state faces. Having been brought up outside of TN being a Tam I have had to face a lot of questions. The sillyest being - "Oh so you are an engg from TN so you must have a quota in a Software Company" !!
On the other hand in TN questions like - "Oh so your are from the north a ? Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham , Kuch Kuch Ota Hai, Dilwale dul - adhu enna da hehehe" are very common.
Grt start dude!! Radio Nirmala rocks :D
goes with the image as well ;)
happy bloggin!!
Agreed! Though your post is in a lighter vein, there's no denying that regional stereotypes, and discrimination are all-pervasive.
yay! nirmala rocks! :)
